Grading the Top 10 Comedy Songs in the U.K.!

1. Funny Song Factory, “#1 Banana Song Dance Remix, Despicable Me Minion Fun Song”

So I’m not sure exactly why this doesn’t happen here, too, but in Europe it seems like novelty ringtones go to no. 1 sometimes. For whatever reason, Americans were immune to Crazy Frog disease. Anyway, there are a bunch of homemade fan videos on YouTube for this short ringtone remix of the Minions from Despicable Me singing a “Banana” version of “Barbara Ann,” mostly made by groups of girls dancing around in their rooms. This video just got optioned to be a Sofia Coppola movie.

Grade: B

Best YouTube Comment: “Hahahaahahaha!!! Is that a podcast!! Xxxx” — emily kate

2. GameChap, “Mine It Out”

Why yes this is a Minecraft-themed parody of will.i.am and Britney Spears’s “Scream and Shout” by a YouTube user named GameChap. It doesn’t hurt that I already secretly like “Scream and Shout,” and this is sort of better than the original because of the singer’s monotone voice and the lyrics to the bridge being “respawn, respawn, respawn, respawn.”

Grade: B+

Best YouTube Comment: “Very cool it made me cry :)) it’s the best…like” — cristi34480

3. Bart Baker, “We Can’t Stop Parody”

HATERS ARE MILEY’S MOTIVATORS. Also you can’t parody a parody. C’mon y’all.

Grade: F

Best YouTube Comment: “Oh my shit, this is too funny and true, all the things his saying could be true but there also funny” — TheSilverGirlz34

4. Jon Cozart, “After Ever After”

Jon Cozart is a dude from Austin who has a YouTube channel called “PAINT” and a lot of Twitter followers. He’s a 20-year-old student at UT-Austin who has been making YouTube videos since he was 13 (ahhhhhhhhh!). It’s not this dude’s fault that I hate a cappella, but sorry Jon Cozart. I can’t. Also, you said the word “Chinamen” in the first minute of this song and made a Taliban joke about Princess Jasmine? Yikes.

Grade: D-

Best YouTube Comment: “Fuck you and my ruined child hood, why did you have to go there man. T.T Nah just kidding great song, but I can now never watch an old disney movie without thinking this.” — Shockproofgamer

5. Inthelittlewood ft. The Yogscast & Sparkles*, “Screw the Nether”

ANOTHER PARODY SONG. This one is “Moves Like Jagger” about … Minecraft again! Who knew there were so many Minecraft-themed parody songs? The Nether is composed of Netherrack. This sounds exactly like a Gorillaz song.

Grade: C+

Best YouTube Comment: “you hate the nether? you should hate the aether, you lose all your stuff there too” — TheRoyaleBacon

6. Tom Milson & Benjamin Cook ft. Jack Howard & the Becoming YouTube Choir, “Becoming YouTube Was a Waste of Time”

Becoming YouTube is a 12-part webseries (“A weekly ‘documentary’ series about YouTubers, with fantasy elements and sketch comedy and trifle”) about two British friends trying to become “Internet famous” together. Benjamin Cook, the creator, is a television blogger who writes primarily about British television, particularly Dr. Who. This is Cook’s first foray into the world of Internet comedy videos. At the end of the series, they realize that “Becoming YouTube” ruined their lives. In the tradition of arch British bands like the Kinks and Pulp, this is a very accurate description of a very small sliver of social life in a way that that is so, so British.

Grade: B

Best YouTube Comment: “Thanks so much for making and uploading this! I love this song so much!” — chocoholic123abs

7. The Yogscast, “Best Friends (From Now On)”

The Yogscast (also featured on no. 5) is a YouTube channel based out of Bristol (U.K., not Connecticut) specializing in video game–related content. Their most popular videos are about World of Warcraft and Minecraft. So much crafting! Turns out all of these Minecraft parody songs originate from Yogscast. I officially have no idea what any of these jokes are about (video games?), but this Pet Shop Boys–style version of “What’s Going On” by 4 Non Blondes mixed with “Don’t Cry Out Loud” by Melissa Manchester is amazing on its own terms as a song. This reminds me of the period of my life where I watched a lot of Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Grade: A+

Best YouTube Comment: “this is seriously a good song hahahahaha” — toastednoodle1996

8. The Lonely Island ft. Adam Levine & Kendrick Lamar, “YOLO”

The backpack rap Spinal Tap are back with another song that is basically a real song. Andy Samberg seems really sick of his own shtick at this point. Here’s hoping he gets to move on with Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Grade: B-

Best YouTube Comment: “Y.O.L.O. spelled backwards is O.L.OY. which stands for Only Losers Obey Yolo” — BackShredder

9. Toby Turner & Tobuscus, “Nugget in a Biscuit”

Toby Turner is an Internet personality from Niceville, Florida, who is the guy who did the “Don’t Tase Me, Bro” remix. He has a Dane Cook vibe, but is really sort of the male Jenna Marbles. He also makes Minecraft videos because apparently everybody does. Just try to get “Nugget in a Biscuit” out of your head.

Grade: B+

Best YouTube Comment: “This fucking song has been stuck in my head for the last 2 days. I’m thoroughly insane right now.” — Soultrip89

10. Monty Python, “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”

BRITISH PEOPLE!

Grade: A

Best YouTube Comment: “And now for something completely different…” – DracoWolf1000
