‘Nightcrawler’ Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal Is a Demented Go-Getter

Remember Jake Gyllenhaal creeping around Jay Z and Beyoncé’s real trailer for a fake movie? Shave the beard, subtract a few el-bees, keep every ounce of creepiness, stir in a little more creepiness, and you’ve got Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler.

In the directorial debut from Dan Gilroy — a longtime screenwriter whose credits include The Bourne Legacy and Two for the Money — Gyllenhaal plays the gaunt, intense Lou Bloom, a freelance crime journalist looking to make a name for himself on the eleven o’clock news. He drives a cherry red car at high velocities, occasionally in pursuit of a police officer heading to a crime scene. He’s got a motto he’s happy to repeat for anyone and everyone. He knows his values, telling us, “What I believe is that good things come to those who work their asses off, and that good people who reach the top of the mountain didn’t just fall there.” Translation: not afraid to move a dead body around for a good shot.

Nightcrawler costars Bill Paxton, Mad Men’s Kevin Rahm, and Rene Russo (Gilroy’s wife) in her first non-Thor appearance since 2005. It’ll also feature a mirror-smashing scene that might just give Channing Tatum’s Foxcatcher mirror-smash a run for its money — especially since it landed Gyllenhaal in the hospital.

We’ll find out if it was worth it October 17. In the meantime, this trailer rules.
