21 Jump Street Trailer: Jonah Hill Acts While Skinny

Hollywood’s eighties remakes have been undergoing some box office flailing recently. Can 21 Jump Street — the adaptation of Johnny Depp’s classic (young-looking) cop-show — reverse the curse? Maybe! The new red band trailer is certainly enjoyable enough, with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill (he also co-wrote) showing some serious chemistry playing rookie cops who go undercover as high-school kids to gather intel on a mysterious new designer drug and get yelled at by Ice Cube. The trailer wisely acknowledges that Channing Tatum does not, in any way, resemble a teenager (like, at all) by lobbing multiple shots at him (“A lot of things that me wonder about you: Your taste in music … the fact that you look like a 40-year-old man”) and having Ellie Kemper sexually harass him. Meanwhile, the screen debut of skinny Jonah Hill (he’s been showing up in interviews looking all healthy, but this is the first movie he shot while slim) going swimmingly. As the beaten-down sidekick to Tatum’s hapless super-cop, he pulls off his usual snark and low-simmering bitterness, only with less chance of heart disease. Remaking a TV show for a demographic that did not watch it: possibly, in this case, not the worst idea ever!
