The Top 10 Songs … ON THE BBC ASIAN DOWNLOADS CHART!

1. Garry Sandhu ft. Sudesh Kumari & DJ Dips, “Ik Gal”

Punjabi singer Garry Sandhu samples all-time great Amar Singh Chamkila’s classic “Ik Gal Sun Billo Kan Kar Key” for his modernized remake, with DJ Dips adding a little more bounce to the original’s bhangra beat. I love these male-female argument songs. Sandhu was deported from the U.K. to India last year and is currently working on getting back in.

2. Banger ft. Jaswinder Jassi, “Patandra”

A back-and-forth dialogue between Banger and Jaswinder Jassi, produced by Sukhi Chand with sections sampled from another Chamkila song. Banger aims to bring folk Punjabi music back into bhangra, which has become increasingly pop-crossover-oriented in recent years. Still, the lyrics reprimanding an unfaithful husband could easily come from a Beyoncé song.

Grade: A-

Best YouTube Comment: “For those who don’t know, Patandra means Rascal!” — GuggsBiki

3. DJ Raj ft. Bakshi Billa & Sarbjit Kaur, “Jago”

DJ Raj is, according to his own YouTube bio, “one of the youngest professional wedding DJs in the UK.” How old is DJ Raj? I could not figure it out, but he dresses like Drake and rocks a T.I. goatee (a goaT.I.). This is DJ Raj’s second single, featuring the vocal talents of Sarbjit Kaur and Bakshi Billa. Throw a wind machine on brightly colored satin sheets and watch me levitate. I can’t explain the background chick with crazy contouring who looks a little like a Real Doll, but she’s apparently a popular video girl.

Grade: B

4. Jay Status ft. DJ Sanj, “Katal Kare”

Jay Status has an awesome voice and this is the best ever coed G-rated tribute to Magic Mike. DJ Sanj’s website is also sweet. Katal Kare!

Grade: A

Best YouTube Comment: “THIS SONG IS WICKED AND DJ SANJ KICKED THE PARTY MUSIC WAS COOOOOOOOOL!!!” — banrajsingh

5. Surinder Rattan ft. Metz N Trix & Joga Singh, “Has Has”

Producer Surinder Rattan’s debut album was called THE LICK. He is the self-proclaimed inventor of “Desi Garage,” a fusion of Punjabi music and house music. Metz & Trix also got their start in the U.K. garage scene, where they were notable for mixing bhangra with hip-hop and R&B. Unfortunately, this sounds like the overexposed pop-house that is finally going out of style just as the sun sets forever on Jersey Shore.

Grade: C

Best YouTube Comment: “Yolo polo” — aman27050

6. Neeraj Shridhar & Kavita Seth, “Tum Hi Ho Bandhu”

A song from the film Cocktail starring Saif Ali Khan, which is not a remake of the Tom Cruise Cocktail. Saif Ali Khan is related to the Bengal Renaissance poet and polymath Rabindranath Tagore, famous for bringing slang and colloquialisms into Bengali literature, who in 1913 became the first non-European winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. Cocktail concerns a gender-swapped Jules and Jim–style love triangle between dashing Gautam (Ali Khan) and best friends Veronica (Deepika Padukone) and Meera (Diana Penty), who are sharing a London flat for the summer. The film and soundtrack are both already huge hits. This clubby song captures all the froth and YOLO of a sunburned romantic three-way.

7. GV ft. Garry Sandhu, “Brick”

GARRY SANDHU STR8 KILLIN THE GAME. A summer jam about how friendship is as strong as a brick.

Grade: A-

Best YouTube Comment: “greasy track by Garry and GV” — dilpreetgrewal

8. Gemini Sounds ft. Bakshi Billa, “Punjabi Sher”

More letterman jackets, Porsches, pool, and some psychedelic visualizer screens. Tough tune and baby DJs at the end.

Grade: A

Best YouTube Comment: “BIG UP this tune!!” — dhana995

9. Bups Saggu ft. Nirmal Sidhu, “Punjabi Hurrr”

Sounds a little like a Punjabi remix of “Party Up” by Swizz Beatz and DMX mixed with “Muscles” by Diana Ross. The opposite of ambient music. A workout mix song for real. HURR!!!

Grade: B+

Best YouTube Comment: “Hurrrrrrr is the new eye of the tiger!!!” — Hitproductions43

10. H Dhami, “Tenu Nachdi Vekna”

H Dhami is taking a lot of flak for releasing this remix of a song from his first album as an official single rather than new music. I love how many of the dudes on this countdown are dressing like Drake.

Grade: D

Best YouTube Comment: “this is whack! sounds just like all his other song and sounds just like juggy d song” — bepunjabi1
