Box Office Recap: Breaking Dawn Beats The Muppets Again

Summit Entertainment

With zero new films in wide release, this weekend was won (again) by Breaking Dawn, fast on its way to earning all of the world’s money. Below, your Top Five movies.

1. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (weekend: $16.9 million; total: $247.3 million)
Jesus, Twilight fans. Enough! Topping the box office for the third consecutive weekend is fourquel Breaking Dawn, which has already earned more than half a billion dollars worldwide despite being even worse than the previous three Twilight movies.

2. The Muppets (weekend: $11.2 million; total: $56.1 million)
Shouldn’t this delightful, all-quadrants crowd-pleaser have made more money in two weekends? Vulture blames the other well-reviewed family-aimed movies (Hugo and Arthur Christmas) for eating into Muppets‘ grosses. Also, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked arrives in two weeks to sate young fans of crap.

3. Hugo (weekend: $7.6 million; total: $25.1 million)
Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-contending 3D kids’ movie opened in 600 more theaters over the weekend but lost a third of its audience. Blame Arthur Christmas, The Muppets, and Grantland’s editorial staff, who called off plans to see Hugo on Saturday when they could not agree on a time.

4. Arthur Christmas (weekend: $7.3 million; total: $25.3 million)
Another casualty of the family-movie glut. Possible silver lining: another weekend like this and it might be in stores on DVD in time for Christmas.

5. Happy Feet Two (weekend: $6 million; total: $51.8 million)
With the twin failures of HF2 and Mr. Popper’s Penguins, it’s been a disastrous year for penguin-themed cinema.
