The ‘They Came Together’ Trailer: Wet Hot American Rom-Com

They Came Together sees David Wain and Michael Showalter coming together to do for romantic comedies set in New York what Wet Hot American Summer did for summer camp comedies of the ’70s and ’80s. Wain, whose last directorial effort, Wanderlust, was a masterpiece, co-wrote the script with longtime collaborator Showalter. They Came Together is essentially a parody of You’ve Got Mail. Amy Poehler plays a quirky candy store owner à la Meg Ryan, while Paul Rudd is the sexy befuddled everyman (think Tom Hanks) who works for a corporate candy chain that threatens Poehler’s business. Formulaic rom-coms are overripe for a takedown, and Amy Poehler is long overdue to play a romantic lead.

The movie is stocked with Wet Hot alums like Ken Marino, Christopher Meloni, Zak Orth, and Michael Ian Black. No word yet on whether Meloni humps any fridges. Also seen in the trailer are Ed Helms, Jack McBrayer, Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, and Jason Mantzoukas, among others. Rom-com clichés spoofed include the meet-cute, the sexy ex comes back on the scene, the scene where a guy’s friends give him advice during a pickup basketball game, that thing where you and your love interest accidentally dress identically as Ben Franklin. So when They Came Together comes to theaters and the Internet on June 27, it’ll be a refreshing counter-program to the ongoing glut of big summer movies. If the dead body in the pile of leaves doesn’t make you chuckle, you might be that dead body.
