Sigourney Weaver Says James Cameron Is Shooting Three Avatar Sequels Simultaneously

Much like Tom Emanski, James Cameron is going back-to-back-to-back. While the HMFIC hasn’t confirmed this himself, his Avatar star Sigourney Weaver now says three return trips to Pandora will all be shooting at the same time. Reports Showbiz411, “[Sigourney Weaver] goes right into a new Christopher Durang play for a short run at Lincoln Center. Then she films Avatar 2, 3, and 4 … Weaver says she has no idea how long it will take, or how it’s going to work. ‘I just show up,’ she said.” Looks like Cameron is done exploring the depths of space and sea, and is ready to get back to making tons and tons of cash. Hooray!

Last we’d heard, Cameron was planning, at least at first, on shooting two Avatar sequels. The existence of a third one, and the possibility they’d all be shooting at the same time, is brand-new information for you Na’vi obsessives. As to when you’ll actually be seeing the finished product — well, I have no idea. The play Weaver is starring in doesn’t even open until October, meaning they’d probably start shooting around the end of the year. As for how long shooting might take, we can look at the Lord of the Rings production, which also shot a trilogy’s worth of material at the same time: Principal photography on that bad boy took 438 days. But the happy takeaway here: There finally appears to be some movement on those Avatar sequels you’ve been fiending for.

By the way, my favorite part of this: If I were a different, more cultured person — like, say, the legitimate theater fans over at Broadway.com — the bit of this showbiz gossip that’d really get me going is that, oh shit, there is a new Christopher Durang play. Seriously, though? It sounds pretty cool: “In Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Durang transports characters and themes from Chekhov’s work to present day Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Vanya and his stepsister Sonia have lived their entire lives in their family’s farmhouse. While they cared for their ailing parents, their sister Masha has been gallivanting around the world as a successful actress and movie star, leaving Vanya and Sonia trapped and regretful. Their soothsayer/cleaning woman, Cassandra, keeps warning them about terrible things in the future, which include a sudden visit from Masha and her twenty-something boy toy Spike.” Maybe you could kill some time waiting for Avatar 2 through 4 by checking out Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike?
