American Reunion Trailer: Alyson Hannigan, Others Return
Time moves faster in our Internet-addled universe. It seems like just recently our collective nostalgia cannons were pointed squarely on the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind and that only mere days ago we were celebrating the return of animated arsonists Beavis and Butt-Head. But our thirst for the thin gruel of the past is unquenchable: This April sets the clocks back to the summer of 1999 with American Reunion, the fourth film in the famous pie-fornicating franchise.
The entire old gang is reunited here, many looking worse for wear. The plot — a bunch of average schmoes slipping into the adult quicksand of their late twenties coming together for one last Jager-fueled romp on the greener-grassed fields of their youth — is both inevitable and sort of poignant. Alyson Hannigan has a hit TV show, but the rest of this once-golden gang have probably been camped outside their agents’ offices for years awaiting this script and one last sniff of the big time. Chris Klein, Seann William Scott, Tara Reid, Shannon Elizabeth, even the back-from-the-brink Natasha Lyonne is present. Sure, the jokes in this green-band trailer are creakier than the cast’s IMDb pages — baby ruins sex! Adult drinks shot! — but the more you think about it the more American Reunion seems ahead of its time. It’s less about re-creating the innocent, cherry-flavored (and cherry-losing) fun of the first film and more about celebrating where we are today, a world in which Andy Warhol’s 15 minutes are ancient history and a schlub like Thomas Ian Nicholas can stay a little bit famous forever.
