Only 3-Pointers and Layups: The Rio Grande Valley Vipers on the Grantland Channel

The Houston Rockets’ D-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, shoot more 3s than any other team in professional basketball. Head coach Nevada Smith and Rockets general manager Daryl Morey share an innovative basketball philosophy that has the Vipers shooting primarily from the 3-point line (about half their shot attempts per game) and within 5 feet of the hoop (about 40 percent). Is the elimination of the midrange jumper a fad or a revelation?
