Great Moments in Local Advertising: The Thunder Move Cars in Norman
I’m going to have to check IMDb really quick, but I’m pretty sure Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Brad Bird, Terrence Malick, and the Coen Brothers must have collaborated to make this commercial, because THERE IS NO OTHER WAY IT COULD POSSIBLY DELIGHT ME THIS MUCH.
A couple of notes:
• How adorable is Reggie Jackson? Perkins is clearly the “star” of the spot in the sense that the big laughs are planned around his glowers (“Sir, allow me to repeat myself: I simply will not sing your goofy song”), but it’s RJ’s cheery, kinda-half-bashful eagerness to please that sets the bit up. If the Thunder get minutes like this out of Reggie Jackson all season, they may not miss James Harden after all.
• Theory: Perkins didn’t realize he was filming a commercial. The “or we’ll just give you the vehicle” line emerged during normal conversation when the directors turned up at his house with a camera.
• Ibaka, 0:22: “Woooww.” What’s the tone here? Genuinely amazed? Sarcastic? A little trolling? You are a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a trilby, Serge Ibaka.
• Nick Collison Charisma Watch: The first 20 or so times I watched this, I assumed he was just a dude who worked at the dealership. Maybe we need a bigger font for Nick Collison appearances? Not criticizing, just asking!
