Watch the Excellent Trailer for Fox’s ‘The Last Man on Earth,’ Starring Will Forte
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_xNvdptsXYFresh out of Nebraska, newly serious actor Will Forte is ready to rock us once more as the title character in The Last Man on Earth. In the Fox pilot helmed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street, Clone High), Forte’s Phil Miller (wonder where that name came from) checks off a few of the usual postapocalyptic boxes, like “looking grizzled” and “foraging” (for porn as well as food). But because Fox wants this to be a successful series and not just another bleak, survival-oriented future-tale, Phil will also be getting into a few “what if you were totally alone in the world?” fantasy scenarios, like singing the dead nation’s anthem in Dodger Stadium and snatching art out of museums.
The half-hour Last Man on Earth was ordered straight to series back in February. Vulture wrote that the show was initially “described as being about two humans left on Earth trying to get over their differences.” By the time of the pickup announcement, though, Forte was said to be the only lead.
According to a press release, the year is 2022, and humanity’s wipeout came courtesy of “an unlikely event.” Phil “used to be just an average guy who loved his family and hated his job at the bank.” Now he’s canvassing North America in his RV to search, unsuccessfully, for fellow survivors. “He is sad and so, so very lonely,” the release reads. “But he’ll get through this. Because there’s a small kernel of hope that somewhere out there is another survivor. And maybe one day, they’ll run into each other. That would be a good day. And if that survivor happened to be a woman? Well, then that would be a great day.” So basically yes, there will be another human being on the show at some point, and there’s at least a 5 percent chance it’ll be another SNL alum ready to shock us with his or her straight-faced acting chops.
