Kanye and Kim’s ‘Vogue’ Cover: Just Let Love In
Vogue
We all have that friend.
The one who complains about the decor at birthday parties. The one who circles typos on a wedding program. The one who can’t be happy on vacation.
That’s the friend who probably just found out about the new cover of Vogue and is disgusted. Furious. Or thinks it’s fine, but not acceptable. Mentions that it’s better than LeBron–King Kong Vogue, but still problematic. Hates that this is what high fashion has become. Thinks everything Kim and Kanye’s relationship represents is a despicable sign of the times. Thinks Kanye is crazy. And thinks Kim is the epitome of trashy.
Does this friend occasionally make valid points? Sure. Why not? But it’s Friday. Friday afternoon.
You’d think a family portrait plus a 45-second video would please that friend on a Friday, but no.
Not even close.
So how do you deal with that friend? If they’re in your ear, in your texts, or on your Facebook news feed, or on your Twitter timeline being a downer, just send them this.
This is called happiness. As Grantland’s Andrew Sharp occasionally says aloud, tell that friend to let love in.
But this won’t satisfy that friend. Because they’ll counter with this.
Don’t be discouraged, though. You can’t give up. Because you’ve still got these.
That friend might admit that it’s cute, but they still have plenty vitriol left to throw around. And that’s when they bring up this.
And this.
And close with this.
With that spree of “evidence,” that friend will assume their case is closed. A landslide victory, that friend will think. That friend will assume their love of never being happy has successfully spread to you. And that their work as an Internet missionary of despair is complete.
But you have one final counter.
And then this.
AND THEN THIS.
That friend will not concede. But inside, they will know that they have lost. And, even worse, that friend will feel happy on the inside. They will not smile, but they will actually have thoughts like “This is so beautiful.” And “I can’t let anyone know how happy I feel, but I feel so happy right now. Why am I crying?”
You won’t know it, but in a rare moment of vulnerability, that friend just let love in.
