Australia Prepares for the Mayan Apocalypse, The Real Housewives Might Be Staged, and Other Harsh Realities
Australian PM Julia Gillard takes 50 seconds to bid Q&As good-bye forever before, as the Mayan calendar predicted, the zombies eat us all. Speaking of zombies: The Walking Dead’s Gale Ann Hurd is producing Horizon, which was just picked up by USA. It’s a World War II drama, with aliens. (Anne Frank and aliens: peas […]

American Horror Story: Asylum Season 2, Episode 8: ‘Unholy Night’
Last night’s episode of American Horror Story: Asylum wasn’t my favorite, though it did feature Deadwood’s excellent Ian McShane as a psycho, serial-killing Santa and dentures as Christmas tree ornaments. I guess it was time for an episodic bridge, an installment with dialogue set to soap-opera music (and an instrumental of the creepiest carol, “Hark […]

SNL Asks America for Host Ideas, We Tell Them the Ten They Should Pick
Since SNL announced that it will occasionally be crowd-sourcing host and musical guest suggestions — and since the first Host of the People (if you don’t count the Betty White campaign), Louis CK, had such a good turn — I’ve been brainstorming my short list of candidates for 2013. Jamie Foxx will host next week […]

American Horror Story: Asylum Season 2, Episode 7: ‘Dark Cousin’
Last week, as Grantland took a much-needed tryptophan nap, American Horror Story: Asylum packed quite a wallop. Before I start recapping this week’s episode, let’s catch up. In Dr. Thredson’s (Zachary Quinto) torture chamber, Lana (Sarah Paulson) is still being held hostage, though this time in what appears to be her bed from home; Dr. […]

SNL Episode 8: Jeremy Renner Gets Upstaged by Chris Christie
Things I wanted from SNL this past week: Bobby Moynihan’s Guy Fieri responding to the scathing Pete Wells New York Times review (why on earth did they cut it?); Adam Levine parodying his American Horror Story role; Jeremy Renner somehow addressing his appearance in the strange Bravo docudrama “The It Factor,” or maybe addressing his […]

American Horror Story: Asylum Season 2, Episode 5: ‘I Am Anne Frank, Pt. 2’
Last night was Ladies’ Night at Briarcliff, and by “Ladies’ Night” I mean that ladies were on the torture menu exclusively. Nipple lampshade appetizers? Sure thing. Sliced abdomens over alien babies? You got it. Lobotomy frozen islands? Falling-down-a-trap-door parfait? Cold-corpse-of-your-ex-girlfriend flambé? NO THANK YOU, I’M FULL. But we’ve removed the teeth, sir. Well, then. OK!

SNL Episode 7: Hathaway Mugs, Rihanna Kills
Some people, apparently, haven’t forgiven Anne Hathaway for the 2011 Oscars. I think it’s time to get over it and enjoy her beautiful, goobly face. I would rather see someone try so hard — like Judy Garland–style trying hard — than just zombie walking, or should I say Sloppy Swishing, his or her way through […]

American Horror Story: Asylum Season 2, Episode 4: ‘I Am Anne Frank, Pt. 1’
So far, one of the most intriguing aspects of American Horror Story: Asylum has been the promise of exploring the dark side of psychiatry’s history: Skinner Box name drop (I’m still hoping that an upcoming episode will ignore the fact that Skinner’s baby-tender-as-human-isolation-chamber has been debunked, and run with it), misused electroshock therapy, exorcisms, and […]

SNL Episode 6: Louis C.K. Parties in the Dark
It’s probably fitting that the two shows that make former New Yorkers feel the most complicated dim sum array of emotions, Louie and Saturday Night Live, conflated last weekend, less than a week after Superstorm Sandy slammed the East Coast. Missing a regional joke on “Weekend Update” or watching Louis eat at Russ & Daughters […]

American Horror Story: Asylum Season 2, Episode 3: ‘Nor’easter’
It was almost eerie, the title of last night’s AHSA episode: “Nor’easter.” Ryan Murphy has a knack for that. The fact that this episode was no more Halloween-y than the previous two, but that it revolved around a storm, was interesting to me: This year’s Halloween has been, obviously, overshadowed by a huge, horrible weather […]
