Tina Fey is quickly transitioning from movie star to very busy movie star. She’s got This Is Where I Leave You (which looks great) on its way to theaters and Taliban Shuffle on its way to production. She has a second movie with her BFF Amy Poehler, The Nest, en route. Here’s a happy photograph from the set of that one, while we’re at it — thanks, Ike Barinholtz from The Mindy Project!
Current events, though. On Tuesday a report started making the rounds, one that said Fey was producing Hocus Pocus 2. That was exciting because (a) 1993’s Hocus Pocus was a childhood touchstone for possibly everyone of a certain age, and (b) who knew a sequel was even being discussed?! (The same site that launched the Fey report actually posted an exclusive in April detailing the plan for Hocus Pocus 2.) Alas, it’s not true. Tina Fey is not working on Hocus Pocus 2, and Hocus Pocus 2 may not even exist. (Neither “hocus” nor “pocus” sounds like a word anymore. I guess they weren’t quite words in the first place?)
What is true, and closely related, is that Fey is going to produce and star in a non–Hocus Pocus witch film at Disney (which owns Grantland but does not personally email me about either its developing projects or Tina Fey’s career moves). There’s no information other than Deadline’s word that the movie is “described as falling in the vein of Ghostbusters.” We’ll take it! Allison Shearmur is one of the producers; she has credits on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and the upcoming Kenneth Branagh–directed live-action Cinderella. Maybe The Untitled Witch Project is secretly a Maleficent-style tale from the point of view of a Disney witch? Tina Fey as Ursula the sea witch?
