Songs of the Week: La Roux, Eternal Summers, Flying Lotus, and More

Hear a week’s worth of jams.

Eternal Summers, “Never Enough”

It’s been a while since I fell in love with an indie rock band, but Virginia’s Eternal Summers have me totally crushed out. They play unpretentious jangle pop that makes you feel really good about feeling sad. The Lurid Pictures–directed video for “Never Enough” is the indie-rock version of Mark Romanek’s video for Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off,” depicting Eternal Summers out of their element as a Mumford-y newgrass band, a Kraftwerk-inspired synth-noir group, and playing a basement show as a black metal group, before a final showdown in the forest. This is a perfect song to listen to on repeat while willing summer to turn into fall.

La Roux, “Kiss and Not Tell”

La Roux is on some Wham! shit (and it’s glorious).

Big Data ft. Joywave, “Dangerous”

This song is a few months old, but its data-paranoid message feels especially relevant this week! With an incredibly creepy/funny video.

Flying Lotus ft. Kendrick Lamar, “Never Catch Me”

I TOLD YOU JAZZ FUSION WAS GONNA MAKE A BIG COMEBACK!

Sway Clarke II ft. Tink, “Secret Garden”

Sway Clarke II is a Canadian singer who makes postmodern R&B. Here he brings in Tink, the fabulous Chicago singer who has previously been featured in this column.

Loudon Wainwright III, “Man & Dog”

Some citified bluegrass from Loudon Wainwright III, who is as wry and weird and fantastic as ever.

La Arrolladora Banda El Limon de Rene Camacho, “Me Dejaste Acostumbrado”

Refreshing banda music for the last hot waves of this never-ending L.A. heat spell.
