I mean, this is actually fine. It’s just that no one asked for it. There is enough Beach Boys material in existence that is this but a billion times better, you know? Also “that’s why God made the radio”? Pretty blasphemous reading of the Book of Genesis, if you ask me. Maybe that bit is in Deuteronomy.
Marilyn Manson and Johnny Depp, “You’re So Vain”
OK, yeah, I don’t know, man. You tell me.
Nothing will ever top “Poppa Was a Player” in the “Nas Rapping About His Immediate Family Members” department, but this new track about his little girl — he “call[s] it shit for n***** with daughters” — is a surprisingly effective, direct, and non-maudlin number. The quietly burbling late-career resurgence continues!

Reks ft. Action Bronson, “Riggs & Murtaugh”
I’m not a genealogist or anything, but how weird of a name is “Murtaugh”? And how did it end up so prominently utilized in a mainstream action comedy? Obviously everything worked out and then some, but the studio had to have focus grouped the shit out of “Murtaugh” before rolling with it, right? Was there some guy in the room being like, “Uh, I don’t know, can we just call him ‘Williams’ or ‘Johnson’ or something?” And was everyone like, “Shut up, dude. We’re going with ‘Murtaugh’”?

Fiona Apple could have come back with an album that consisted entirely of her blowing into the top of empty glass bottles so as to make them play the Tetris theme music, and people still would have been geeked. Luckily, she did not do that.
Kool A.D., “La Pinata”
Whether or not this is an unspoken tribute to Ghostface’s classic clip for “Cherchez La Ghost,” one thing is clear: It’s music videos like these that continue to make the two-word pairing “hotel party” one of the most potent phrases in the English language.
Killa Kyleon and Mouse on the Track, “Dick Look”
The Fader pointed us to this track from Killa Kyleon, which is worthwhile on its own, but which also happened to remind me of Killa’s Boss Hogg Outlawz crew mate J-Dawg, and his absolutely perfect 2008 jam “Ride on 4’s.” That song, which can be heard here, contains wise words — “Shit the fam’s good, the kid’s good / so why not grip wood through the hood” — that should, as you listen now, augur you one hell of a weekend.
