From creative note ideas to unorthodox approaches for bottle-handling, the Chris Brown-Drake beef has given us so much. What it hasn’t given us, though, is any music. Since the incident popped off at NYC’s Club W.I.P. a few weeks back, neither Drake nor Chris had entered the vocal booth to articulate the struggle, anger, and pain certainly bubbling just underneath their respective surfaces … until this weekend, when Breezy finally shifted the tension into his recorded output.
Rapping alongside The Game over Kanye’s remix of Chief Keef’s “I Don’t Like,” Brown has a few choice words for his enemy. Just listen to some of these scathing lines! “One-on-one, what you scared, bruh? / Matter fact, take care, bruh.” Ah, very clever, the way he used the name of Drake’s last album, Take Care, to … well, you know, to make a sentence. We also have: “Them eyebrows, man, them shits is yikes / OVO, you overdosed, screamin’ YOLO no, I live twice.” Gah. Eyebrow-focused personal attacks. An interesting route. Anything else? “They throwin’ bottles / I’m throwin’ models.” What? Why are you throwing the models? Shouldn’t you, instead, be doing what it is people do with models with the models?
OK, look, Chris, seriously — thanks for trying. Call me an old-fashioned girl, but I’m of the opinion a worthwhile beef should churn out some music before it dies off, and you taking the first shot at doing so is a commendable move. The thing is, this is terrible. It’s not good. But I know you’re not primarily a rapper — maybe you could pay a rapper to write your anti-Drake material for you? Because as it currently stands, Drake won’t feel pressure to respond to this, and we’ll never have a proper, full-fledged back-and-forth to keep track of.
